Syverud (1922-2010) was raised on a farm near Black Earth, Wisconsin, and graduated from high school in Madison. During World War II, he served with the 701st Bomb Squad, 8th Air Force. His plane was shot down and he was taken prisoner in May 1944. Syverud was honorably discharged in 1945 as a staff sergeant and settled in Madison (Wisconsin).
